Key Stage 3

 

Curriculum Aims

At The Bridge, we want our students to become confident and effective readers, writers and speakers. They will be encouraged to gain a broad experience of English across Key Stage 3, while also developing the key skills they will need to be successful GCSE students. We want students to develop a deep appreciation and enjoyment of reading and the English language, equipping them with the life-long skills to be effective, confident learners and communicators.

Curriculum Content

Non-fiction – students will study a range of non-fiction texts such as political writing, travel writing and advertising. They will develop an awareness of writing for a purpose and a particular audience which they will apply to their own writing.

Victorian Life – through fiction, poetry and non-fiction sources students will explore the language and culture of Victorian Britain and be introduced to a range of classic Victorian writers.

Poetry from different times and places –students will read and study a range of poetry opening them up to the breadth of British cultural experience as well as poetry from around the world.

Genre – an understanding of genre will be developed through an in –depth exploration of either gothic texts, dystopian fiction or crime writing. Students will apply this knowledge of genre to their own original creative writing.

Shakespeare’s World – students will delve into the rich world of Elizabethan life and their fascination with the stage. They will study a range of Shakespeare plays, building an appreciation of drama as performance.

Modern literary fiction – students will study whole texts and extracts, exploring narrative technique as well as themes and characterisation.

Curriculum Experience

All students will access a rich, challenging core curriculum. Most classes will contain a varied range of needs and prior-attainment, therefore teaching will be adapted to ensure that all students are invested in their learning and being stretched to achieve their full potential. Topics such as non-fiction texts, literary fiction and poetry will be visited more than once during KS3. Novels and units such as Genre will, typically, comprise of around 6 weeks of teaching culminating in a written or oral summative assessment. Each unit will integrate the teaching of foundational skills such as spelling, punctuation and grammar. All units of work will maximise opportunities for students to develop their spoken language skills through debate, discussions and presentations.

 

 

Key Stage 4

 

Curriculum Aims

The aim of GCSE study in KS4 is to begin to integrate the skills required to succeed at GCSE level by introducing students to higher level texts and approaches. Analytical and critical approaches will be integrated and taught. A strong emphasis on securing basic skills of spelling, punctuation and grammar will be maintained.

 

GCSE English Language

The aim of the GCSE English Language course is to develop the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will be taught to: communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing and to understand and respond imaginatively to what they hear, read and experience. A range of texts (fiction and non -fiction) and media will be drawn upon.

 

GCSE English Literature

The aim of the GCSE English Literature course is to develop an informed and critical responses to a range of texts in the form of prose, poetry, and drama. Students will experience and explore different times, cultures, viewpoints and genres as found in literary texts.

Curriculum Content

 

AQA GCSE English Language

Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing

• one literary fiction text

• descriptive or narrative writing

• written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes (50% of GCSE)

 

Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives

• one non-fiction text, one literary non-fiction text

• writing to present a viewpoint

• written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes (50% of GCSE)

 

Non -examination Assessment: Spoken Language

• Presenting

• responding to questions and feedback

• use of Standard English

• separate endorsement (0% weighting of GCSE)

 

AQA GCSE English Literature

Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th century novel

• one Shakespeare play

• one 19th century novel

• written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes (40% of GCSE)

 

Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry

• modern prose or drama texts

• a thematic poetry anthology

• responses to unseen poetry

• written exam: 2 hour 15 minutes (60% of GCSE)

All students will study for entry in BOTH English Language and English Literature.
