Spanish

We encourage pupils to understand the importance of a second language in today's world and we promote pupils' reflection on all the benefits they could receive in different areas of life, such as education, career and general everyday communication. In addition, we believe that the study of MFL may lead pupils to recognise that diversity is a matter for respect and celebration in a world of multiple cultures and languages.

Spanish is a global language and it is the second most widely spoken language in the world with more than 470 million native speakers.

Spanish language and culture are becoming more and more influential worldwide, especially in the United States, where nowadays there are more Spanish-speakers than in Spain.

Spanish is also the third most widely used language on the Internet; it is the second most used language on Twitter in London; and it also comes second on Facebook.

According to the report 'Languages for future- Which languages the UK need most and why', published by the British Council, Spanish is in the top of the 10 most important languages for Britain's future, using indicators such as the current UK export trade, the language needs of business, government's future trade priorities, outward visitors destinations or emerging high-growth markets.

The number of people studying Spanish has increased steadily, to the extent that it has overtaken German as the UK’s second most popular language to learn at GCSE level.
